You and your child will learn and experience introductory water skills with the incorporation of both safety and fun. The goal of this program is for both parent and child to become comfortable in the pool together!Our Preschool course acts as a bridge program that will help your child transition from Waterbabies to our group swim lesson program.

Register for this class if

• The participant is new to swimming or has never taken group swim lessons before.  

The typical age of swimmers in this class ranges from 4 - to 8 years of age.

This class is a perfect start to a new swimmer's journey. This class is for swimmers new to swim lessons, moving from private lessons to a group setting, or who have aged out of Water Babies 3.

Swimmers in this class need no prior swimming knowledge or skills.

Water Movement. 
25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

Register for this class if the participant

• Is comfortable in the water. 

• Can move through the water BUT needs to learn the basics of swimming. 

• Float on their back.

• Put his/her face in the water comfortably.

The typical age of swimmers in this class ranges from 5 - to 10 years of age.

This is the right class for swimmers who are not afraid of the water but need to learn how to swim and float independently.

The focus is on swimming independently and safely in the water, while developing swimming freestyle and backstroke.

Stroke Introduction & Development

25min class | Location: Pool Swim Square

Register for this class if the participant

• Completed Level 2 Beginner and were told by your instructor to move to Level 3. 

• Can submerge underwater and touch the bottom of the pool in 3ft. 

• Swims freestyle and backstroke independently BUT the strokes need further development and proper technique. 

The typical age of swimmers in this class ranges from 5 - to 12 years of age.

Intermediate swimmers can move through the water on their own and if asked can float on their back without assistance.

The focus of classes is on the technique of the swimming strokes, especially freestyle and backstroke. Learning how to swim properly with good breathing and stroke technique is crucial at a young age.

Stroke Mechanics & Endurance.
25 min Class | Location: Pool Lane 1 

Register for this class if the participant

• Completed Level 3 Intermediate and were told by your instructor to move to Level 4. 

• Can swim freestyle 1 lap of the pool with proper breathing technique (turning head to side). 

• Can swim backstroke (on their back) 1 lap of the pool with proper technique. 

• Swims breaststroke (frog kick) and butterfly (dolphin kick) independently BUT the strokes need further development and proper technique. 

• is strong enough to independently tread water and be in the deep end of the pool without help from the instructor.

This class will be conducted in the shallow and deep end - the swimmer needs to be comfortable and independent in the deep end. 

The average age of swimmers in this class ranges from 6 - to 15 years of age.

The advanced class builds upon the swimmer's freestyle and backstroke endurance and technique.

Breaststroke and butterfly are taught with an emphasis on technique, so swimmers need to have the developmental motor skills and strength for these strokes.

45 min Class | Location: Pool Lane 1 

Register for this class if the participant

• Is ready to be instructed from the pool deck - the instructor will primarily coach from the deck but may occasionally get in the water as needed. 

• Can swim all 4 strokes (Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly) without assistance. 

• The swimmer is preparing to join a swim team or the swimmer wants to build endurance for fitness purposes. 

The average age of swimmers in this class ranges from 7 - to 15 years of age.

Swim Club prepares swimmers for the swim team.

It is also an excellent source of exercise and strength-building for young athletes who play different sports and are not ready for the commitment of a swim team.

Coaching/Teaching is from the deck (occasionally/If needed instructor will be in the water for demonstration/instructional purposes.

We offer classes ranging from Water Babies (6 months) to Level 5 Swim Club (15 years). Our mission is to guide swimmers through each level with positive, high-quality instruction, helping them achieve their swimming goals while providing families at HHI with a safe, enjoyable, and supportive aquatic experience.

Swim levels are provided as a guide for parents/guardians to reference upon registration.

Our swim levels are designed with safety and positive progression in mind. If your child is registered for the wrong class, they will be moved to the appropriate level, which will result in a change of class time. If you're new to Island Rec Center Group Swim Lessons or unsure as to what level to register your swimmer for, we encourage you to schedule a swim evaluation by emailing Ashlyn.smith@islandreccenter.org

Many factors contribute to a swimmer's development, and each swimmer progresses at their own pace. Unlike traditional schooling, it is perfectly normal to repeat a level. This ensures both the swimmer's safety and continued development.

You contact Ashlyn via email, and she will arrange a time and date for a brief in-water evaluation to ensure your swimmer is placed at the correct level.

Please ensure that your contact information is up to date and that you regularly check your email during the session for any important updates.

You will be notified through email as soon as possible if/when a class is canceled or if there are changes during the session.

Swimming lessons take place in an outdoor environment, and classes may be canceled due to unpredictable conditions. Regardless, there will be only one makeup class offered per session. This makeup class will only be scheduled if two or more classes in the same week are canceled.

We understand that life happens and if you need to miss a class, we understand. However, please note that if you choose to miss a class for any reason, the swimmer will not be eligible for a makeup session.

No refunds will be issued after the first week or two swim lessons.
