The Carmines Family Recreation Scholarship Fund

The Hilton Head Island Recreation Association is a community­ based non-profit organization, which raises over $200,000 annually. Monies raised go to our scholarship fund, to ensure that no child is denied recreation. The Association offers scholarships to fit every individual’s financial situation. The Association strives not to turn away anyone due to financial limitations. Two out of three children receive a scholarship for childcare or recreational activities.

Scholarship Fund Requirements

In Order To Qualify, Scholarships Request Forms Are Due Immediately After Registration. Scholarship Application Must Include A Copy Of Your Most Recent Tax Documents.

Scholarships are limited and are given to those most needy. The Island Recreation Association is a non-profit organization; the registration fees are designed to cover staff, insurance and programming costs.

The Association believes being awarded a scholarship is a privilege. This privilege should not be taken for granted. 

The one request the association asks of a scholarship recipient is to keep your program payments current. The Association reserves the right to terminate scholarship arrangement at any given time if your account is delinquent.

  • David McGee Carmines (1977-2001) was born and raised on Hilton Head, the son of Brian and Gloria Carmines, the owners of Hudson's Seafood Restaurant. He loved the outdoors and focused that passion on mountain climbing, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, skiing, and kayaking. He was a kayak instructor/tour guide at Outside Hilton Head and a graduate with a B.S. in geology.

    David was diagnosed with third-stage non-testicular germ cell carcinoma in December 1988 and courageously fought this disease for the next 30 months. He died at the M.D. Anderson Oncology Center in Houston, Texas on March 10, 2001.

    He was truly an exemplary young man much beloved by his family and friends with whom he kept in close contact by email throughout his fight with cancer always closing his letters with "Keep the Faith."
